Inspired by the Tunisian revolution, the Egyptians gave another example of how to overthrow a dictator in 18 days by peaceful demonstrations, civilized means and unparalleled courage in the face of one of the most savage regimes in the world. The Egyptians have reclaimed their dream and showed the world that people are stronger than governments and that authoritarian rule is fragile as usually lack any solid foundation.

Wednesday was one of the worst days of the Egyptian peaceful revolt as Mubarak's forces riding horses and camels charged at unarmed civilians in Tahrir square. 3 people were killed and 1500 wounded while the army stood still and did nothing to end the attack. Today we all cry for Egypt and hope that tomorrow brings peace and comfort to those who struggle for what's right. I hold Mubarak accountable and directly responsible for the fallen victims today.

Today, on my first day at work, a colleague of mine asked me about the situation in Egypt as her husband is in the city of Hurghada and she lost all contact with him since the internet, cell-phone and short messages were cut-off by the Egyptian government. Her little son is watching the news and asks if his dad is dead!! I tried to comfort her and let her know that the army is taking control and that her husband must be safe and she will soon hear from him. Then I walked away with my heart filled with anger and hate towards Hosni Mubarak. Damn this man who would stop at nothing to remain in power even against his own people.

A videoclip that shows violations and fraud in the Egyptian Parliament’s elections in order to wipe out oppositions and to insure the regime’s overwhelming majority. According to the video description it appears to be that the song was written and produced by Muslim brotherhood. The fact is, it does not really matter this time as there is a general sense of injustice among the Egyptian people and increased hunger for change. Those videos that uncover the documented and systematic government’s deception are getting more popular. The views have exceeded 10s of thousands in a matter of days which is bringing the battle to a ground in which the current regime cannot win or silence the outcome!

There is a problem with delivering the message to the Egyptian people. We need to communicate the message more effectively in a very simple manner that it would be very easy to understand by the majority of the Egyptians. The method should focus on answering what’s in it for me in order to be part of the process of change. I suggest using film/drama ads to help people envision a better future achieved only through change in contrast of the gloomy reality under the current regime.

Freedom .. Not So Much!

Freedom of expression is not absolute as much as I would like to think otherwise. My father is a cartoonist who is working for a local Arabic newspaper. Since we immigrated to Canada from Egypt, he turned political. Free from censorship, he openly criticises the Egyptian government and other Arab leaders in a way that would not be possible back home as a drawing of such nature could send its creator to prison for a very long time.

My father recently told me that the paper is no longer distributed in the mosque since they started cutting pages out just because they don’t agree with the content. Censorship again he says. But perhaps the biggest influence on the direction and the policies of the paper, in my opinion, is not the religious institution or the political power for that matter but rather the community itself and its widely accepted ideas originated from a dominant culture that remains intact for generations in the new home Canada. Because the paper is totally dependent on advertisements for financial survival, the editors have no choice but to steer away from the so called sensitive issues of ethnic and religious nature or otherwise risk the consequences of losing the advertisers business. As a result, misinformation in the name of science is published on a monthly basis about the inability of scientists to determine the age of the earth or the problems with the theory of evolution by natural selection which the editor called “natural election”!

The continuation of such systematic undermining of science to support a certain belief system is a cause for concern as I think it has an unparallel effects on shaping peoples view of the reality as I am sure I would not feel very comfortable around someone who thinks the earth flat or Noah’s flood killed the dinosaurs, ignorance is not always bless and the disconnect from reality is very painful to watch.

The Canadian educated Arabs/Muslims are enjoying what seems to be unlimited freedoms and for the most part share a lot of western values not to mention the fact that they are perfectly adapted to living and working in an open society accepting non Islamic or culture specific laws. As the community grows, they may seem to other Muslims or Arabs back home as too liberal or having more tolerance towards western traditions but in reality the fact remains that the vast majority live in the paradox of conflicting ideas. It would be very interesting if we have some statistics showing the percentage of Canadian-born/educated Muslims who would favour Sharia law including honour killing for adultery, sawing off hands for theft or forcing women to cover their faces in public, the numbers will be overwhelming and the misinformed public would not mind losing a lot of their civil rights, especially women, to enforce those medieval laws.

I am sure some would disagree and maybe others would argue that this was the reason they left their home countries to escape from that backward governing system. The fact remains that most are enjoying the values of the west but holding on to a belief system that is so hostile to modern civilization fuelled by ignorance and years of indoctrination by the community.
